LIPOPHORESIS™
Iontophoresis is the delivery of charged particles into the skin by an electric charge. This is an ideal way of gaining substantial skin penetration of the emollient. And, it is an ideal way to enhance efficacy, since penetration is the best way to enhance the activity of topical drugs and personal care products. Liposomes can be charged. Therefore, any compound can be used with iontophoresis. And, the liposome will enhance penetration. Attached to the surface of the liposome is a positive charge. When the two positive charges come into contact, the charge from the device and that from the liposome, the liposome is repelled or driven into the skin.
The market for the patented and patent pending LipoPhoresis technology is topical drug, cosmetic, and transdermal drug applications. There are many new applications that have been impractical due to the limitations of current technology that can be overcome with LipoPhoresis. Transdermal delivery has historically been limited to those drugs that are small in size, highly potent, and can easily penetrate the skin due to their physical and chemical characteristics. The principal reason for the limited number of transdermal products relates to irritation caused by solvents designed to ease the passage of drugs through the skin. These solvents dissolve the lipid-rich stratum corneum membranes, while many also damage the keratinocytes permitting the passage of the therapeutic agent into lower levels of the skin where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. This results in a high incidence of reactions.
LipoPhoresis can overcome many of these objections, since QuSomes do not disturb the lipids or keratinocytes. The electronic charge pushes the active drug through the lipid channels. And, it can do this with a wide size range and wide range of chemical characteristics. LipoPhoresis is therefore suitable for applications such as anesthetizing intact skin prior to dermatology surgery, laser surgery, micro-dermabrasion, veno-puncture, biopsies, and vasectomies.
